Overall, there’s a lot to love here
Line of Events
Soriya returns to Cambodia to find herself after her mother’s death, where she finds a family she never knew and an old building full of dark secrets. After the death of her mother, a Japanese-Cambodian manga artist and her boyfriend decide to travel to Cambodia to learn more about her past, but when she encounters strange events in the building that suggest something darker is happening to the residents, she must stop it before expand. One of the stronger features is the really fun and engaging setting, which has many interconnected parts that work well together. Starting with the backstory of her mother who died under mysterious circumstances while living in a community from which she had long been estranged, provides a way to establish the theme of return as well as giving enough of their history with each other.
This setup helps make the film much more enjoyable as the sinister instincts come true
Since we are aware of the relationship shown and how it affects her, the desire to reunite with everyone after she manages to discover the cause is a natural part of their reunion. It also makes the presence of community behaviors and rituals seem like the perfect choice to enhance this type of story, appearing as distinctive customs before gradually becoming darker and more sinister. This creates a fantastic sense of looming dread the longer the two remain in union, with increasing danger leading to greater excitement. With a low-key nature that revolves around the good-natured, if slightly odd behavior of the community or simply noticing the ritual decorations left behind, it’s nice enough to serve the film until the more overt sequences later when she’s left alone in the apartment.

A major sequence takes the form of a bizarre food preparation with the assembled family members and others she has met in the community performing what appears to be a ritual ceremony designed to prepare her for a special occult ritual that soon turns into a nightmare of a fever dream that she cannot tell the difference. She kicks off the rest of this in a much darker genre effort that includes several revelations about the visions she’s had, leading to a wild finale that reveals the dark origins of the ceremony as it involves the introduction of a new spirit into the host’s body, which is again more muted than was expected, but still manages to deliver with generally disgusting visuals and chases around the compound. There’s a lot to like about it all, because while there aren’t many downsides here, there are a few issues that crop up. One of the main factors here is the sense of confusion, since very little is explained.
Here are some minor flaws noted in this case
With the first half being much more ominous and subdued than anything else, there isn’t much in the way of figuring out what’s going on, preferring to stay focused on the haunting atmosphere of the building as well as their ominous behavior to almost exclusively induce scares. As a result, almost nothing is revealed about what the community is trying to do, what their ritual involves, or how it is all to be performed, so very little is touched upon. It’s only at the end that things really settle down, so there’s a chance that it’ll be a little confusing to get into what’s going on at first. The other downside is that this setup makes for a rather slow first half and very little happens other than setting up the plot, which is completed at the end, so it takes a while to get there.
