This is a false assumption
Line of Events
When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with leading one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events, selecting a new Pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. Based on Robert Harris’ 2016 novel “Conclave.” Cardinal Benitez delivers his climactic speech in Spanish. It’s a stretch to assume that all the other cardinals can easily understand him. All the cardinals are fluent in Latin by default, and many speak Italian in other conversations in the film. All of these languages belong to the Romance language family, so it’s not a stretch to assume that most of the cardinals have a basic understanding of Spanish.
Greetings from the Darkness Again
Sister Agnes: Even though we sisters are supposed to be invisible, God still gave us eyes and ears. Quoted in The Saad Truth: My Review of Conclave (Film) – Wokeism Destroys Everything (2024). It seems like it’s been a while since we’ve had a good old serious-minded, tension-filled, “big” drama with big movie stars. Well, that’s exactly what director Edward Berger, fresh off his Oscar-winning ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (2022), delivers with his latest film. Writer Peter Straughan (TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY, 2011) adapted Robert Harris’s 2016 novel, and the result is a crowd-pleaser that could earn some Oscar consideration.
Ralph Fiennes delivers what might be his best performance yet
And that’s saying something for the highly respected actor who previously excelled in films such as SCHINDLER’S LIST (1993), THE CONSTANT GARDNER (2005), IN BRUGES (2008), A BIGGER SPLASH (2018)) and THE MENU (2022). ). His impressive career is further bolstered by his most recent role as Cardinal Lawrence, burdened with the heavy burden of facilitating the titular Conclave charged with electing a new Pope. As the film opens, the beloved Pope has just passed… and as they say, “let the games begin.” Naturally, these games involve political maneuvering, power struggles and backroom promises.
voice the Church needs now
Director Berger chooses to show us very little of the actual negotiations, and instead showcases the various iterations of loyalties during each subsequent secret ballot (of course) within the confined walls of Vatican City and the Sistine Chapel, Cardinal Lawrence. His time is mostly spent investigating suggestions, berating others for their behavior, and dealing with the immense egos of the few he considers (including himself). Stanley Tucci plays Cardinal Bellini, who pretends not to want the job while campaigning as a “progressive” politician. John Lithgow is Cardinal Tremblay, one of the most ambitious and assertive who may or may not have intentionally undermined another’s work. In any case, Lucian Msmuati’s Cardinal Adivemi is the victim of Tremblay’s actions.
She is extraordinary and memorable in her limited role
Cardinal Tedesco, played by Sergio Castellitto, is the most vocal in his desire to return the church to the old ways (Latin Masses forever!), what he considers correct. Bryan F O’Byrne plays O’Malley, Lawrence’s assistant, yet despite all these men, it is Isabella Rossellini as Sister Agnes who manages to shoot (figurative) fire from her eyes, while still keeping her “job.” 39; and significantly impact the trial. Early on, a big surprise arrives in the form of Cardinal Benitez (Carlos Diehz) of Kabul, who was the last appointed by the previous Pope and unknown to the others. As a novel, this could be a real page-turner, yet the film never rushes from one moment to the next. The tension builds with every revelation, tarnished guise and secret plot.
