Based on Robert Harris' The 2016 novel CONCLAVE takes viewers to the Vatican during the College of Cardinals' the process of choosing a new pope… And… if the average age of the people in the theater where I attended the screening is any indication…" Adults" flock to this movie. Directed by Edward Berger (ALL SILENCE ON THE WESTERN FRONT), CONCLAVE moves at a blistering pace as it uncovers a mystery – not a “who”; but rather "who will get it" – and it gets surprisingly tense. This is partly due to the great and good actors that were cast in this film.

Don’t be surprised if both Fiennes and Tucci (as well as director Berger) are mentioned during the Oscar nominations (they’re that good)

Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort in HARRY POTTER) anchors the proceedings as “Dean”; a cardinal tasked with leading the disparate group of cardinals until the unanimous election of the next pope. Acting as much detective as facilitator, he wrestles with his religious conscience…and ambition…while uncovering the plans and intentions of some “humble servants”; fight for the top position. John Lithgow, Isabella Rosellini and a few others (mostly unknown) have long had pole position claims; in the race for the next pope. Special mention goes to the GREAT Stanley Tucci for his support as one of the contestants whose platform seems to be “I don’t want it”; but who deep down really wants her. As mentioned before, this movie has a ton of twists and turns, and those twists are fun to ride, but to be honest, I felt like this movie went “one twist too far”; and it should/could have ended 10 minutes before that (without the last turn).

Now, some would say that this final twist is the point of the movie, but…I’d be fine if it wasn’t. Written Grade: A-8 stars (out of 10) and you can give it to the Bank (ofMarquis)
