It follows Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham as their long-running rivalry comes to a head. The same location was used to depict Trenwith House in the 2015 BBC TV adaptation of Poldark. As far as TV shows go, this year has been pretty average.

Rivals stands out as an absolute highlight

It’s a multi-layered piece that certainly deserves a sequel. Conceptually, it’s a soap opera, narratively a satire, and stylistically a period piece. The attentive viewer will find a message within that, for once, isn’t a superficial or forceful push for political idealism, but instead a search for truth.

Rivals is entertaining, clever, irreverent, and funny

No episode feels stilted, unnecessary, or forced; the story and characters build beautifully toward an extraordinary climax. The writing, set design, lyrics, and direction all serve the greater good. The soundtrack appeals to any 80s kid.

The acting is a joy to watch

The always excellent David Tennant shines as a humanized villain, with Alex Hassell as a formidable opponent. Victoria Smurfit and Aidan Turner make a convincing, well-matched broken couple. The audience witnesses the rise of several new stars, especially Bella Maclean who will be a name to watch in the future.

Highly recommended, the best show of the fall
