A unique profile of British pop superstar Robbie Williams. The film is based on several interviews that filmmaker Michael Gracey conducted with Robbie Williams over a year and a half at Williams’ recording studio in Los Angeles, USA. Although the interviews were not originally intended for the film, as Gracey “just wanted [Williams] to tell his story in his own voice”, most of Williams’ voice in the film comes from those recordings: if you want to laugh, just do it from the inside, right? You would expect colour, theatre, music and dance in a Robbie Williams biopic, and this one does not disappoint visually, but where lesser biographies lead to arthouse films, this one delves into Robbie Williams’ psyche as he tries to come to terms with everything he’s ever wanted but still feels like it’s not enough.
Jonno Davies is fantastic as Robbie, capturing his movements and quirks perfectly
The film moves at a blistering pace and there are very few moments where the film stops to catch its breath, but Michael. Thanks to Gracey and the team around him, the film is still impressive. I also have to thank the Weta team for their incredible work in making his performance as a chimpanzee represent how Robbie sees himself (playing an ape, less developed than those around him). Raechelle Banno plays Nicole Appleton (from All Saints) and gives an emotional performance as Robbie’s fiancée.
It seems like Michael Gracey really wanted to tell a story
Her dance performance and the montage of their reunion are definitely one of the highlights of the film. Steve Pemberton is perfect as Robbie’s father, the man who made him who he is in the worst possible way. The film’s big advantage is that it’s an independent film. The sex, drugs and rock and roll are all on display in all their grotesque glory.
Her singing and voice were exceptional
Robbie Williams himself should be commended for letting all the film’s flaws and faults get in the way of the audience. He’s not doing well for much of the film, and his honesty with the audience strengthens the film. This film is amazing and looks in your face for most of its run, but like the man it captures, there’s a sensitive soul beneath the boldness. This is the best film of the year, a visual and aural feast.
